With housing stress at an all time high, the time is right for CLTs. There are groups of committed people working on this model across Australia.

Byron Shire Community Housing Ltd
As a small regional community, there’s not much we can do to influence national housing policies, but that hasn't stopped us from taking action on a local level. Studying how other parts of the world have responded to similar problems, the standout model for us was a Community Land Trust.
Our CLT is developing not for profit rental accommodation. Our first development is the construction of a group home, custom designed to meet the needs of women and children in the Byron Shire. The project has a total of five bedrooms and two bunk rooms, connected to the communal living pavilion, via a secure and covered walkway.

SMBI CLT Ltd
We were established in February 2019. We are a registered charity established to steward property on the Southern Moreton Bay Islands to ensure that the Islands retain perpetually affordable housing, as property values inevitably rise.
Our aim is achieved by properties being permanently removed from the property market and secured by the CLT. The properties are then made available for ownership or rental to low to moderate income households, providing secure tenure, housing stability, and reducing housing stress.

Blue Mountains CLT
The Blue Mountains Community Land Trust is a First Nations and Community led organisation working towards long term solutions to the housing and climate crisis. We believe in place-based solutions that respond to local needs and create homes and healthy living environments for local residents, and non-human habitat. The Community Land Trust model enables an ethic of care and stewardship of land for the collective benefit of community and Country embodied by our Darug and Gundungurra Elders.

Byron Shire Council Led CLT
Byron Shire Council plans to create a Council-led land trust. The preferred model is a ‘company limited by guarantee and licensed with Council being the majority shareholder’. The purpose of the land trust is to hold land for the development of local housing that meets the needs of the community. Council needs to apply to form an entity under Section 358 of the Local Government Act 1993 to the NSW Minister Local Government to create the land trust.

Waterfall Way Community Land Trust
The Waterfall Way CLT is based in the Bellingen Shire and surrounding areas, on the North Coast of NSW. We are in the final stages of incorporating as a not-for-profit company and becoming a Registered Charity.
Our first priority is to develop shared ownership options for locals who have been priced out of their communities.
The CLT is a key project for the Housing Matters Action Group, a resident-led community group determined to find local responses to the housing crisis. The establishment of Waterfall Way CLT is being funded by the Siddle Family Foundation and community volunteer effort. The materials developed through this project are freely available for others interested in establishing a CLT.

CLT development and resource support
Wilya Ajjul Janta Aboriginal Corporation
Wilya Janta (Standing Strong) Housing Collaboration is working on culturally safe and climate-appropriate housing for remote Aboriginal communities. We have identified the CLT model as culturally appropriate and a good structure to enable our approach as we move forward. We are a housing collaboration between Traditional Owners, medical professionals, architects, and local tradespeople. Our initial focus is on Tennant Creek in the Northern Territory.

Land in Common Inc
We are a not-for-profit organisation established in Freemantle, Western Australia. We are leading a movement to enable Community Land Trusts across WA as a potential solution to the affordable housing crisis and to counter the effects of gentrification in urban areas. We advocate for CLTs to be recognised in public policy as a mechanism to enable collective ownership and community control of land, and safeguard it for affordable housing in perpetuity.
